Synopsis
From the greatest holiday writer of all time comes a story of hope, family, and Christmas cheer. Charles Dickens’ classic tale follows Toby Veck, a London porter who stands day-after-day beneath the bell tower, listening to the chimes. When the hardships of life and the state of the world begin to drive Toby towards despair, the magical chimes take him on a journey into the future, reviving his hope and renewing his joy.
Created and performed by Ben Tissell.
The Role — Seeking AEA / Non-AEA Actors
Toby Veck — Understudy · 30’s–60’s
Anthology Productions Portland seeks an understudy to perform the role of Toby Veck in our inaugural production of The Chimes, a one-man performance created and performed by Ben Tissell. The understudy will participate fully in the rehearsal process and is expected to perform during the run. This is not a standby engagement; the probability the understudy will go on is high and may include select performances agreed upon at casting.
Future Engagement. The understudy will also be considered for the 2027 production and potential tour, as part of Anthology One.
The Chimes centers on Toby “Trotty” Veck, an aging London ticket-porter whose warmth, humor, and humility endure despite crushing poverty and constant social humiliation. Trotty survives by “trotting” errands through the cold streets of Victorian London, clinging to the comforting voices of the church bells that seem to speak directly to him. Though deeply loving toward his daughter Meg, he has gradually absorbed the cruel belief that the poor are somehow “born bad” and at the root of all society’s problems. The role demands an actor capable of balancing Dickensian charm, comic physicality, emotional vulnerability, and spiritual wonder, while grounding the character in genuine humanity rather than caricature.
In this one-man adaptation, the actor portraying Toby must serve as both narrator and emotional center of the entire story, rapidly transforming into a wide range of contrasting characters while maintaining Trotty’s perspective and journey. Exceptional vocal dexterity, physical storytelling, and precise character differentiation are essential, as the performance moves fluidly between satire, supernatural fantasy, comedy, and heartbreaking social realism. The ideal performer will possess strong command of heightened language, the ability to create vivid theatrical worlds with minimal staging, and the emotional range to carry Toby from despair and self-doubt toward hope, compassion, and renewal.

Ben Tissell has been developing this one-man adaptation since 2020, building audiences and refining the work across years of performances. What arrives at the World Trade Center Portland in December 2026 is fully realized: Broadway-caliber design, intimate storytelling, performing inside a building Portland General Electric built in 1975.
